Did he see his shadow or did he not? That is the question!
If he sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter! If he doesn't that means an early spring!
Since Groundhog Day the movie came out in 1993, almost everyone has heard of Punxsutawney Phil! Did you know that's just his nickname? His full name is "Punxsutawney Phil, Seer of Seers, Sage of Sages, Prognosticator of Prognosticators, and Weather Prophet Extraordinary." That’s a mouthful!
Now rather than relying on Punxsutawney Phil alone, a few other states now have their own groundhogs. I checked in on a few this morning. Just what did these guys predict today?
Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania:
It’s official, Punxsutawney Phil arose from his burrow and spotted his shadow. Therefore, according to America’s most beloved groundhog we will have 6 more weeks of winter. Fun fact: Since the tradition began in 1887 he has seen his shadow 107 of the 127 recorded predictions.
General Beau Lee of Atlanta, Georgia:
General Beauregard Lee, did not see his shadow and predicts we will have an early spring! Fun Fact: Beau and his ancestors have been making their predictions since 1981 and have only predicted a longer winter 3 times in the last 32 years!
Birmingham Bill from Birmingham, Alabama:
Birmingham Bill, whose name is actually Jamie Bill slept
right through the Groundhog Day holiday in 2022 and thus no word from him in 2023. Per his caretakers in 2022, “When hibernating
it is best for his system to allow him to continue until he wakes up naturally.” Today, there has been no report from Bill so unless he decides to wake up there will be no
prediction from Bill this year!
Sir Walter Wally from Raleigh North Carolina:
Has decided to retire in 2023!
Sir Walter Wally has decided to retire and so there will
be no Groundhog Day Shadow Ceremony for him in 2023! The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
invites everyone to visit from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 2nd
to enjoy various groundhog-related activities.
Well, based on Punxsutawney Phil seeing his shadow and General Beauregard Lee not seeing his, we will just have to wait and see who was right this year!
Fun fact: Did you know, it turns out a groundhog can predict the end of Winter, just not the way you might think. Groundhogs hibernate from late fall to early Spring. They will only come out when Spring is near!
Happy Groundhog Day Everyone!
