Decoding dishwasher noise levels
9/25/17
Confused about what dishwasher to purchase? Most everyone is. Once you decide on options such as color or stainless steel, handle or no handle, cleaning cycles, capacity, price range etc... then you learn there are different noise levels to consider. Do you want to have a dishwasher so quiet that you can't even tell it is running or do you mind if you can hear the dishwasher running while you are in another room?
Dishwasher noise levels are rated in decibels or dB(a). The lower the decibel number the quieter the dishwasher. A difference of just a few decibels may make a big difference. Some say that a dishwasher that is four decibels higher is twice as loud.
Many design factors contribute to how quiet or noisy a dishwasher will be. These factors include location, interior tub materials, pump systems, type of insulation and disposal unit.
Dishwashers with a sound level below 45 decibels or dB(a) are considered exceptionally quiet.
Some of the quietest dishwashers are Bosch at 38-40 decibels, Kitchen Aid 39-46, GE Cafe from 40 and GE Profile from 42.
A decibel rating of 60 may be loud enough to make it hard to carry a normal conversation nearby. Still confused about decibel levels? This list of common sounds may help.
Hairdryer | 85 |
Normal Conversation | 50-65 |
Quiet Office | 50-60 |
Refrigerator Humming | 40 |
Whisper | 40 |
Bosch Dishwasher | 38 |
